Cyber Safety

Staff Meeting Week 8 Term 2

Don't forget to use the display in the Staff Room as a reference point for some of the websites we will talk about today or as an offline place to find the videos for Hectors World and Net Basics. Grab the CDs on the display, just be sure to return them. From the CDs you can download the video episodes to your machine and use them anytime.
The links are also listed below the image so that you have a place online to get them from.

Hector's World: A one stop shop for teacher cyber safety to our littlies. Lesson places, videos, posters, songs. NZ Site.
Net Basics: Very similar to Hector's World by pitched for an older age range. Episodes with helpful messages. NZ Site.
Netsafe: Overarching site for NZ Hector's words and net basics. Lots of information for teachers here. NZ Site.
Net Smartz: American Site. Excellent resources - eBooks, videos, discussion starters. The parents' page is particularly well organised as you can choose which technology (cellphone, blogs, chat sites) you'd like to target.
Think you know: UK Site. This site is organised by age of the child so has targeted information and resources. Some topics on the site can be hard hitting and suggest you use teacher discretion if using this site with your class.
I keep safe: Up to date internet information for educators and parents.
Super Clubs: A great site for 6 - 13 year olds that is free to us for the remainder of this year and is jam packed of things to use in your classroom programmes.

Super Clubs

A few things we will run through in the staff meeting;

The Stars.
These take children through the basics of super clubs, teaching them how to use it well and learning the cyber safety basics. The difficulty of theme increases as you go along. The blue and the yellow can be very time consuming, younger children taking months to complete in some instances.

The Gems.
These are probably best suited to students year 5 and up. Students complete tasks that involve elements of writing, reading and maths to gain a piece of the gem.

The Hub.
This is the homepage that you come to when you log in. It has quick links to different parts of the website and highlights some of the important things that are going on. At the top of the page are some of the most important links;
  • The Hub - to get back here when you have navigated elsewhere.
  • Your School - Search for teachers and students from our school network.
  • Homepage - Takes you to your personal homepage where you are able to edit and add things.
  • Email - Where you can email other members. Email is only within the superclubs site and will not send or receive from outside email addresses.
  • Forums - A place where students can talk to one another under different categories.
  • Logout - A very important skill to teach students, to log out of their account when they are finished.

On the right hand side you also have links to;
  • Who's online - find who is currently logged in to superclubs. This is organised into your school, your buddies and then everyone else.
  • My stuff - where you can change your password and other settings.
  • How to? - GREAT way to find out how to do things if you are stuck.
  • Library - Where you find any pictures and sounds that you or other members have uploaded that you can use on your site pages.
  • My tools (only on teacher logins) - See below.

Teacher tools.
From here you can manage your users, get new passwords for your students if needed and monitor other bits and pieces - email, incidents etc.
